Leverburgh is the second largest community on the Isle of

Harris after Tarbert. Numerous bays and inlets surround the area giving shelter to many small boats. Leverburgh has an interesting history, originally called Obbe (which comes from the Norse word for bay) it was bought in 1919 as part of the South Harris estate by William Lever the 1st Viscount Leverhulme. William Lever wanted to develop a major fishing centre here, a project which ultimately failed. Obbe was renamed Leverburgh with local approval in 1920. File 6644
